Slow Down to Plug In: Holiday Screentime, Downtime & Real Connection

Slow Down to Plug In: Holiday Screentime, Downtime & Real Connection. Schoolโ€™s out, the fridge is empty (again), and your tween is three episodes into their second series of the day. Sound familiar? Weโ€™ve all been there. And before the guilt creeps in โ€” take a breath. Here's the truth:

Downtime matters.

Screens arenโ€™t evil and when managed correctly, a healthy dose of screentime can be more powerful than bans.

Holidays offer a rare pause in the pressure โ€” for them and for us.

Itโ€™s a chance to recalibrate, reconnect, and give their growing minds space to restโ€ฆ and yes, maybe even binge a bit.

But hereโ€™s the tweak we love:

โ€œItโ€™s not about the screen. Itโ€™s about the intention behind it.โ€

So this holiday, ask yourself:

Are they watching to escape โ€” or to rest?

Are they scrolling alone โ€” or connecting with someone?

Are we using the downtime to lean out โ€” or lean in?

Some tween-friendly screen rituals we love:

Start with stillness. A screen-free start in the morning sets the tone for the day.

One screen, one off-screen. For every movie, suggest a walk, swim, or creative outlet.

Screens for skill. Try apps or content that teach (without feeling like school).

Co-watch, co-connect.ย Sit with them. Ask about the plot. Be curious. Laugh together.

The goal isnโ€™t to be screen-free.

Itโ€™s to help them become screen-smart โ€” with your presence leading the way.

Youโ€™ve got this. And if all else failsโ€ฆ hit play and snuggle in. Sometimes, connection looks like popcorn and a home made slush puppy!

Wishing you a beautiful break with meaningful connection!ย
